In April, we are offering Discounted Wellness Panels for dogs and cats. This blood work bundle includes a CBC, Chemistry Panel, T4 levels, Fecal Flotation and Giardia Test, and Heartworm Test. Normally, this is $153 for dogs and $132 for cats, but it will be about 15% off (dogs $130.47 and cats $112.20).

Talking Points:

Wellness testing is a simple and effective way to monitor your dog's health. Early detection allows for the correction or management of medical problems before they become serious, helping to ensure that your dog will live a long, healthy, and active life.

Complete Blood Count (CBC):

• This test reveals details about the various cell types found in the blood, such as red blood cells, which transport oxygen; white blood cells, which combat infection and inflammation; and platelets, which aid in blood clotting.
• The CBC offers insights into the quantity, size, and structure of different cell types and detects irregular cells.
• It is a standard examination utilized across all health conditions to identify a wide range of diseases.

Chemistry Panel:

Blood chemistries (blood serum tests) give us insight into a dog's organ function (liver, kidneys, and pancreas), hormone levels, electrolyte status, and more. We can assess the health of older dogs, do general health assessments prior to anesthesia, or monitor dogs receiving long-term medications.

• Chemistry values that help provide information about the liver include the ALKP (alkaline phosphatase), ALT (alanine aminotransferase), AST (aspartate aminotransferase), and TBIL (total bilirubin).
• Chemistry values that help evaluate the kidneys include the BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and CREA (creatinine). Of these two values, creatinine is a more sensitive indicator of kidney damage. There should be concern, even if it’s only slightly elevated.

Fecal and Giardia Panel:

• Routine fecal examinations are used to detect intestinal parasites in your dog. These parasites may include worms (such as hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms) and microscopic parasites (such as Giardia or Coccidia).
• Parasites cause intestinal disease in dogs, and some (hookworms, roundworms, and Giardia) can also be infectious to humans.
• During their first year of life, puppies should have several fecal parasite exams. Intestinal worms are very common in puppies and can cause more problems in younger dogs, so early detection is important. Not all intestinal parasites are addressed by common dewormers, so fecal parasite exams are important even in puppies that are receiving regular deworming.
• Fecal parasite testing should be performed every six months in adult dogs. This is true even if your dog is on heartworm or other parasite prevention.

T4 Test

• The most common dysfunction of the thyroid gland in dogs is hypothyroidism
• Side effects of hypothyroidism include but are not limited to; Weight gain, Lethargy, Cold intolerance, Bradycardia, Darkening of skin, Skin infection, dull-looking fur, Obtundation, Ear infections, Excessive shedding, Flaky skin, Common cold, Obesity, High cholesterol, Thinning coat, Dandruff, Fatigue, Hair loss, Reduced activity, Thickening of the skin, Thinning of fur.
• Hypothyroidism is a condition of inadequate thyroid hormone levels that leads to a reduction in a dog's metabolic state.

Heartworm

• Dogs have been diagnosed with heartworm disease in every state in the U.S.
  
• Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes, so any area of the country with mosquitoes—even just a few—can also have heartworm disease.
  
• Dogs don’t just need prevention during warm-weather months. Heartworm preventives work by treating heartworms that have already infected the pet within the past month or longer. To be effective, preventives need to be given on time, every time. That’s why the American Heartworm Society recommends year-round heartworm prevention for pets.
  
• The American Heartworm Society estimates that more than a million dogs in the U.S. have heartworm disease—and heartworm disease can be fatal.
  
• Cats and ferrets can also get heartworm disease.
